The guide for the Deer Creek trail describes it has having some "lungbusting" climbing. This couldn't be closer to the truth. With over 2000 vertical feet ascending upto to 10,600 feet this is a doozy of a climb but the views and single track you get are well worth the price of admission. This is the only ride that circumnavigates the mountain of Crested Butte so I could't pass up the opporutinity for this one. The guide also says relatively few people can make all the climbs and I'm not in that category. I probably walked for 5-10 minutes gasping practically falling over my saddle pushing my bike up hill. There are more famous trails such as the 401 and 403 but I'll have to wait until next time to try those - there's a lifetime of trails to ride out here.
Unfortunately we have to leave Crested Butte today to go to Moab, the official Mecca of Mountain Biking. But fortunately it means I won't feel compelled to go on another ride today, I'm pooped.
